BMW's product line of the 1950's had included many, diverse models:

  • Stately sedans like the 501
  • The tiny, 3-wheeled, motorcycle-driven Isetta and 600
  • The classic 503 and 507 models
  • The motorcycle-driven 700 sedan

By the end of the 50's, these models put BMW in deep, financial trouble. It took a visionary man named Herbert Quandt to rescue the company. The product line he created was called the New Class, and it not only saved the company, but also it helped redefine the modern automobile.

The New Class became the new breed of stylish, sporty automobiles, setting many BMW trends in motion, including brand advertising.  Produced from 1961 to 1977, powered by the M10 engine, the New Class overlapped the introduction of the 3 Series.
